500‑Day Cave Challenge

We all need to spend time alone once in a while. But Beatriz Flamini took things to a whole new level. The Spanish extreme athlete decided to take on a huge challenge: She spent 500 days alone in a 70-metre-deep cave, completely cut off from the outside world.

Flamini entered the dark cave on November 20, 2021. To keep herself busy, she took with her 60 books and some art supplies for drawing. She also carried two cameras to take a record of her daily life and activities underground. A team of supportive volunteers helped her by regularly dropping off necessary food, water and clean clothes.

During her long stay , Flamini said that she completely lost her sense of time after about two months. So, she was very surprised when the volunteers finally came down to get her on April 14,2023.“Already” she asked in disbelief.“No way! I hadn’t even finished reading all my books.”

With this feat(壮举 ), Flamini set a new world record for the longest time living in a cave alone. But her main goal was not just to break the record. Instead, she wanted to test her own willpower and mental limits. More importantly, she did this for scientific research. She wanted to help scientists learn more about how long-term loneliness and isolation affect the human body and mind. Well done, Flamini!
