Meet Service Star Evan Shiu, 13, who volunteers as a youth soccer coach and mentor in the Bronx, New York. TFK Kid Reporter Ethan Yu spoke with Evan about his efforts.
What kind of volunteering have you been doing recently?
For the past two summers, I've been volunteering by teaching soccer to younger kids at the church near my home. I also help with other youth group activities, like handing out lunches and assisting with arts and crafts.
Why did you decide to teach soccer to younger kids?
I've played soccer for most of my life. It's a big part of who I am. I love the game and want to share it with younger kids who might not have had a chance to try it before.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering?
Seeing the kids smile and have fun while playing sports. I also like meeting new people and making friends through volunteering.
How do you deal with challenges when they come up?
Sometimes, kids get restless or lose focus. I usually ask an adult for help or try to explain things differently. I also encourage them by telling them they're doing a great job whenever they try hard.
How has volunteering helped you grow?
Volunteering has helped me make new friends and become more confident. It's taught me responsibility and how to work well with others.
What advice would you give to other kids who want to help their community?
Find something you really like and stick with it. When you enjoy what you're doing, helping others feels even better.
