Learn Active Listening

When someone is speaking, are you already planning your answer? If you are, then you're listening to give an answer. Good listeners don't do that. Instead, they listen to understand the speaker.

Good listeners practice active listening. They put aside their own ideas and feelings. That way, they can focus on the speaker's words, body language, and tone of voice.

Also, good listeners show that they’re really interested. They look the speaker in the eye. Then, to keep the speaker talking, they don't stay silent. They nod or say things like "OK." or "I see."

Sometimes, good listeners get confused and want to ask questions. Instead of cutting in on the speaker, they’ll wait for the speaker to finish. They know that it's not polite to jump in.

Good listeners also know not to give their opinions to the speaker. Their opinions won't help them understand what the speaker is going through. What's more, good listeners only give advice when the speaker wants it.

When you practice active listening, you show your wish to understand. It'll help you win people’s trust and build strong relationships. It's an important skill to have.
